Next steps after the passing of a loved one

There are few times in our lives more challenging than when we experience the loss of a loved one. It can be a particularly difficult time for individuals as they are expected both to process their grief, but also take many important steps to finalize end of life details. Here are some important steps that you should consider when dealing with the loss of a loved one or friend.

  1. Create a safe space to grieve:

The time following a loss is often filled with difficult to manage end of life tasks, long hours, and higher than normal stress. It can be very difficult to find the necessary space to mourn. Trust your family and friends to handle as many of the tasks related to the loss as possible, allowing you to focus on your thoughts and feelings, even if only for short windows. Consider contacting support groups or other community resources which can provide helpful, structured support to those in need.

  1. Contact family and friends:

While it can seem very straightforward, often your first step following a loss is to notify your network. This has the potential to be a very sad, difficult task especially if the loss is of a spouse or longtime partner. Consider creating a family phone tree system so that your loved ones can spread the word to other family members. Don’t be afraid to ask your network for help – these are the people that will provide you with the greatest deal of support and help make decisions about what is next.

  1. Make copies of everything and file appropriately:

Another task that awaits many following a loss of a loved one is the collection and management of documents. In order to effectively handle end of life affairs, you will need as complete a set of records for your loved one as possible. Remember that many of these documents will also contain highly sensitive personal information. Some documents will need to be securely stored or destroyed. Consider gathering and making copies of all of the following:

  1. Medical records and death certificate
  2. Financial documents including bank statements, investment accounts, retirement savings, and more
  3. Veteran or other post-employment benefits
  1. Contact a reputable funeral service:

Planning a funeral or end of life services can be the most daunting task for those experiencing a loss. A quality funeral home will help you and your family determine the best possible options for your service. Funeral homes can help with everything from personalization of services, burial or cremation, and more. Most funeral homes also offer flexible payment options to make sure you have the ability to plan the funeral your loved one would have wanted without causing undue financial strain.

  1. Protect yourself from fraud:

Unfortunately, scammers commonly target families of recently deceased loved ones with a number of financial schemes. You should immediately gain access to and close any bank account and credit cards that could be easy targets for scammers.

  1. Determine next steps for living and care:

More often than not, losing a loved one will also mean a change in living situation and care needs. A spouse left behind may find that they are not able to effectively care for themselves without the support of their partner, or that their home is suddenly too large for their day to day needs. Many older adults find that they require more assistance with basic daily activities like bathing, dressing, and eating.
