Benefits of Outdoor Activity for Seniors

As we get older, it’s easy to become more sedentary and spend most of our time indoors. However, getting outside has a range of benefits for seniors that shouldn’t be overlooked. With spring arriving, it has never been a better time to get outside and experience the free perks of nature. Here are some of the reasons why older adults should make an effort to spend time outside.

Mental Health Benefits

Getting outside can help to improve mental health for seniors. Being in nature can be calming and restorative, reducing feelings of stress and anxiety. Studies have shown that being in green spaces can help to improve mood and reduce the risk of depression. Creative outdoor activities like gardening are also a great task that can provide a sense of accomplishment and pride. The Alzheimer’s Society has a great list of tips for gardening for seniors with dementia

Physical Health Benefits

Spending time outside is a great easy way to add exercise into a routine. Simply going for a short walk has real benefits for your body and joints. A study by the American Cancer Society found that even a short walk each day can help you live longer.

Additionally, exposure to sunlight can help to boost vitamin D levels, which is important for bone health. An ideal amount of sun exposure has been shown to reduce the risk of developing serious conditions like heart disease and diabetes according to Science Daily. Just remember to use sunscreen and limit exposure to age appropriate recommendations.

Social Benefits

Being outside can provide excellent opportunities for social interaction. Whether it’s walking with a friend or participating in a group activity, spending time outside can help to combat feelings of loneliness and social isolation. This is particularly important for older adults who may be at higher risk of loneliness. Going to a community gathering space like a park or farmer’s market can be great opportunities for seniors to interact with others and enjoy the sunshine.
