10 Perfect New Year’s Resolutions For Seniors

We’ve learned a lot about appreciating what we have this year. So many things that were taken for granted in the past are now things we regularly give thanks for. There’s no better way of showing gratitude for the new year and welcoming another year into our lives than with New Year’s resolutions for 2023.

As an older adult, identifying practical and attainable goals for the new year is a great way to ensure you achieve what you want. Goals that improve your quality of life and overall health are great ones to add to your New Year’s resolution list!

Don’t know where to start? We’ve compiled a list of 10 perfect New Year’s resolutions to consider adopting as your own.

1. Spend More Time Playing with Your Grandkids

Spending time playing with your grandkids does two great things! First, it keeps you active and fills your life with beautiful moments surrounded by family. Grandkids are a light in this world, and playing with them outside or inside is a great way to get moving. You can even look for new activities you and your grandkids could do.

Being around these active little people is a great way to keep your body and mind active while adding more laughs and smiles to your day.

2. Improve Your Diet

As we get older, our bodies have different dietary needs. Some of these needs include eating less of certain foods or consuming fewer calories in general. This is all a part of life, and ensuring that you have the proper nutrients is essential for your health.

Adding this resolution to your list is a great way to put your body’s needs first. You can achieve this resolution by learning more about your body’s needs. For example, be sure you’re eating enough fruits and vegetables every day. In addition, if you live in an assisted living facility, you can speak with the staff about any dietary concerns.

3. Quit a Bad Habit

We’re not always aware of how our bad habits affect our lives until we give them up. So whether you’re ready to quit a bad habit cold-turkey or you need to slow down, the new year is the perfect time to make the change.

Saying “goodbye” to bad habits like smoking or drinking is a great way to put yourself first and improve your quality of life so that you don’t miss out on a single good moment. Of course, habits aren’t always easy to kick; studies say it takes 21 days for an action to become a habit, but quitting it can take longer. But once it’s out of your life, it’s gone for good. So use this new year to reach new milestones for yourself.

4. Start Exercising Daily

Adding some exercise to your day is excellent for your health. You don’t have to start out with anything long and tedious. Instead, try adding just ten minutes of exercise to your daily routine. In addition, you can ask the staff at your assisted living home about outdoor or indoor activities you could do to exercise a little more each day.

It’s important we stay active in our daily lives, and exercising a little each day also helps with mental health. For example, you could easily reach the 10-minute-a-day mark with a gentle walk outside or maybe even some seated exercises that are easier on your joints.

5. Connect with More People

Connecting with more people by meeting new people or connecting with old friends is a great way to improve your quality of life and cognitive health. If you’re not ready to get out there and meet new people, a great way to connect with others is to reach out to old friends.

Reconnecting with people in your life has never been easier with how technology and social media have evolved. You can easily find people from your past online and message them without hassle. Not tech savvy? A staff member, child, or grandchild can help!

6. Be More Positive

A great mindset to have this new year is a more positive one. With so much happening around us, it’s easy to get lost in worry and “what ifs,” but that’s why focusing on the positive is so important. This is an excellent resolution to add to your list.

7. Regularly Find a Good Brain Teaser

Committing to a brain teaser regularly is a great activity to add to your New Year’s resolution list. This can be in the form of word games or puzzles. Maybe you’ve got an old sudoku book lying around that you’ve wanted to get to. Now is the time! You can also find many brain teaser online games that can be downloaded to your electronics so that you can conveniently take on that brain teaser. (Again, if you need help with technology, a facility staff member, child, or friend can help you.)

8. Learn Something New

Maybe you have a hobby that’s interested you or a skill you’ve always wanted to learn. Well, there’s no time like the present! Take your new year on a new journey and start learning something fresh.

Adding something to your life like a hobby is a great way to stay active and use your mind. Regularly learning new things is great for cognitive function! You can speak with the staff in your assisted living center about activities and hobbies around you.

9. Declutter and Organize More

One thing we can always stand to do is organize our surroundings. But sometimes, it’s easy to forget and let things pile up. That’s why you should add this resolution to your list this year. Set a reminder daily or weekly to organize your things.

10. Focus on Your Safety

Our final resolution that should definitely go on your list is this one. Focus on your safety. Life catches up to us, and a small trip or unintended fall can lead to big problems. That’s why this year, you should focus more on your safety. You can look for ways to safety-proof your home and ensure you’re more vigilant and aware of your surroundings this year.
