Why You Should Consider Senior Living in 2021

As we enter 2021, it’s normal for us to reflect on the previous year. You may be thinking about various areas of your life such as health, finances, your loved ones—and especially their wellbeing. As you think about how your loved one can live their best life, you might consider whether senior living is a good option for them. We highlight three reasons why you should consider senior living in 2021.

There is a greater need for care.

If you have a family member living on their own, you may have noticed they’re in need of additional support. Whether you notice they need assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing and dressing, or you have concerns about their overall safety, senior living is a viable option.

By moving a parent to senior living, you can ease your mind knowing that a team of caring individuals are supporting your loved one each and every day. Compassionate resident assistants ensure that your parent receives assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, and cleaning; a culinary team makes sure your loved one receives delicious and nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day; and an in-house medical team makes certain your family member takes the right medication on time and as needed. A medical team member will keep track of their medication schedule, dosage, and the refilling process. It’s not unusual to find senior living communities partnering with a local pharmacy.

There is a need to downsize.

Have you noticed that your loved one is having a difficult time maintaining their home? You’ve noticed that the home isn’t as tidy as it used to be, they’re only living out of a few rooms, or the grass hasn’t been mowed as often as it should. Based on your findings, it may be time to consider downsizing and moving to senior living.

Senior living communities provide a safe and comfortable environment for elders. Apartments are ideally suited to one or two residents and are purposefully designed to be free of potential hazards, such as narrow walkways and steps. Apartments have strategically placed pull chords in the event of an emergency, easy-to-access showers with grip bars, and fire safety systems. Some communities even offer state-of-the-art fall prevention technology that identifies a person’s risk for injuring themselves before a fall ever occurs.

There is a need to connect with others.

As we mature, connections become even more important. Between loved ones moving away and the death of close friends, feelings of isolation and depression can slowly creep in.

According to whereyoulivematters.org, “The emotional state of loneliness has physical consequences that can be devastating, especially in seniors. For example, people with few social connections, or who feel lonely, have a 29% higher risk of heart disease and 32% higher risk of stroke.” Senior living can quickly eradicate those feelings because it provides seniors with the opportunity to connect with fellow residents during daily activities, as well as attend local attractions like the zoo, movies, or parks.
