Is Independent Living Right for Me?

As you enter the next chapter of your life, you may consider making some changes: how you spend your time and finances, and perhaps where you live. You could be thinking that it’s time to downsize, purchase a new home, or move. One thing is certain, you’re ready to do something different—so why not consider independent living?

We’re highlighting five reasons why you may be a good fit for an independent living community.

Reason #1: You’re ready to downsize

Whether you’re becoming an empty nester for the first time or simply realize that you no longer want to live in a larger home, independent living may be an option for you.

Every independent living community looks different. Some may offer townhome-like villas, and others may offer apartment-style.

Reason #2: You don’t need assistance with activities of daily living (ADL)

Older adults typically move to assisted living because they need support in areas like bathing, dressing, cooking, and cleaning. If you find that you’re able to complete these activities on your own, without assistance, then independent living may be a good fit for you.

Reason #3: You don’t want to worry about home maintenance and groundskeeping

We all know that home maintenance can sometimes be difficult to upkeep. Between mowing the grass in the spring and summer, shoveling pathways in the winter, and raking leaves in the fall, it’s easy to get burnout. There’s also all of the internal home upkeep that’s required, such as preventative maintenance for all major appliances, and heating and cooling programming and service. In independent living, you don’t have to worry about home maintenance—we take care of those items for you.

Reason #4: You want to focus your energy on doing more of what you love

One of the perks of moving to independent living is that you can channel your energy into the things that bring you joy and less on the mundane items such as home maintenance and running errands. For instance, at Provision Living at West Clermont, we have an on-call concierge service that’s available to schedule your grocery deliveries, dry cleaning, personal care services, and shopping assistance.

Reason #5: You want an all-inclusive package

A benefit of moving to independent living is that it’s all-inclusive. Not only do you get a new home, but you may also receive additional benefits such as bundled utilities, a complimentary technology package that includes cable and Wi-Fi, and a home monitoring security system. When researching various communities, remember to ask if the pricing is all-inclusive.
