10 FALL-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES FOR SENIORS

arrow down

Fall is right around the corner, and with it comes shorter days and colder temperatures. Finding new and exciting things to add to a bucket list this time of year may be difficult, however there are plenty of fun and manageable things to do during autumn that will help satisfy you during the longer nights.

How can seniors enjoy the fall season?

Go for a scenic drive or walk.

Before the stillness of winter, we have the colors of fall. The reds, yellows, and oranges against the backdrop of a clear blue sky are a beautiful scene and a great incentive to step outside your home. Take a drive through the neighborhood and enjoy the colorful foliage, or if you live in a neighborhood with sidewalks or close to a park you can go take a walk while enjoying the brisk air and the view.

Watch some old classics.

If the day is cold and wet, you should take the opportunity to binge watch some old classics. Town and Country Magazine listed several that you may be interested in, such as Remember the Titans, Dracula, and Dead Poet’s Society. Just take the day to relax and enjoy yourself.Watch some old classics.

Help your community.

If you want to get into the spirit of giving, then donating or volunteering are great items to add to your bucket list. If you wish to assist the homeless, Better Missions suggests giving actual items over money, such as hats, gloves, scarves, socks, and backpacks. You also have the option to donate to local charities as well.

If you would rather see the results of your assistance, volunteering may be a good option for you. Check in with any local churches, hospitals, or nonprofits in your area to see what sounds good to you. You have a lot to offer your community.

Learn an instrument.

Give learning an instrument a try. Find an instrument you may be interested in and learn how to play. Even if you just learn simple songs, you may find that you enjoy the experience. There are plenty of tutorial videos on the web that can help you learn.

Learn a new language and culture.

Learning a new language is both challenging and good for you. According to the Journal of Neuroscience, learning another language can slow cognitive decline. When you learn another language, it is a good opportunity to learn about the culture it comes from and provides a chance to learn interesting things about another part of the world and the way different people live.

Visit a pumpkin patch.

Another fun activity you could add to your list this fall is a visit to a nearby pumpkin patch. Take your grandchildren or go with some friends and enjoy. Buy a couple of pumpkins while you are there and take them home to carve or decorate. Be sure to take a couple of pictures while visiting the vegetables that are as large as your younger grandchildren!

Host your own Halloween party.

If you have never hosted a Halloween party, you should do so. Setting up the decorations, organizing all the food, and sending out invitations may seem like a lot of work, but it will be worth the effort to see your friends and family in their costumes enjoying themselves at an event you organized. The satisfaction is worth the effort.

If you are the one who usually hosts, try visiting another person’s Halloween party and enjoy the chance to let others do all the work.

Decorate your home.

Take some time this season to get crafty and decorate your home in fall colors. It is a great way to brighten up your home and get into the holiday spirit. Some craft ideas include making a wreath of leaves and decorating a pumpkin.

Go to a local fall festival.

Go with some friends or family to a local fall festival. Enjoy the activities and try some of the food. It is a good chance to enjoy the outdoors before winter.

Try a new food.

Maybe try something you always thought was unappetizing or something belonging to a cuisine in another culture. You may find that you like it or confirm that you never wish to try it again.
