As the temperatures begin to drop and the flowers start changing from lush green to golden yellow and burgundy, itâs an indication that the fall season is quickly approaching. Although the season is changing, there are still a number of fun activities to engage inâespecially if youâre an active senior. You may be thinking, âCan I even participate in activities during COVID-19?â The short answer is yes, and weâve highlighted a few of them.
Walking is an activity that is good not only for your body, but for your mind. Walking has been shown to improve circulation and sleep, and it also slows down mental decline. You can even use walking as a meditative practice. When choosing your walking route, make sure itâs in a safe location thatâs free of debris and offers plenty of space (at least six feet) between you and other walkers.
When we think of fall, comfort foods like soups, pies, and hearty dishes come to mind. Fall is the perfect time of year to experiment with a variety of flavors that are popular and familiarâsuch as cinnamon, pumpkin, and cranberryâas well as other flavors that might be new to you, such as pear, ginger, and maple. Select a few dishes that youâve never made before or try to put a new spin on some classics. Oh, and we should also note that trying a new recipe doesnât have to be solely for foods; you can also try new drinks like apple cider, lattes, and eggnog.
As we begin to spend more time indoors, itâs a prime time to pick up a new hobby. Whether youâre interested in learning how to make candles, leaf pressing, or photography, why not step out of your comfort zone and learn something new? The plus side is that if you pick up a hobby that you enjoy, you could even turn some of your creations into gifts for your loved ones during the holiday season.
Social distancing makes it difficult to connect with loved ones in person, but that doesnât mean you canât connect with them. With tools such as FaceTime, Zoom, and Skype, we can still share meaningful interactions with those we care about. Consider scheduling a family night centered around a theme. For example, you could take a family cooking class or even watch a movie together. With modern technology, the possibilities are endless.
Do you remember the beginning of the year, when you said you would read more books? If you havenât gotten around to it, fall is the perfect time to pick up a book that you havenât finished or start fresh with a new genre. You could even share the fun by starting a virtual book club with your friends and family.
