Definition of the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit
The VA Aid and Attendance Benefit is a tax-free monthly pension benefit available to wartime veterans, surviving spouses, or dependent children who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). For you or your loved one to qualify for this benefit, at least one of these must be true:
- You need assistance with daily activities such as bathing, feeding, and dressing.
- You have to stay in bed or spend most of the day in bed due to illness.
- You live in a nursing home due to a disability-related loss of mental or physical ability.
- You have limited eyesight (5/200 or less in both eyes even with glasses or contacts or a visual field limited to five degrees or less).
These criteria are designed to support veterans and their spouses when everyday tasks become too challenging, ensuring they have the support and care they need to maintain a good quality of life.

How to apply for VA benefits
To apply, complete VA Form 21-2680 and submit it to your local VA office or pension management center. While the approval process usually takes between three and five months, applicants who are initially denied can reapply, and benefits are prorated.

How the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit helps pay for care
The VA Aid and Attendance Benefit is designed to offset monthly expenses related to long-term care and is paid out monthly directly from the U.S. Treasury. Benefit amounts are calculated based on gross monthly income, but applicants can subtract allowable medical expenses such as assistance with medication, dressing, bathing, and other activities of daily living (ADLs).
If a doctor recommends that living in a senior community is the best place for your loved one’s health and safety, some of the costs like rent may be treated as medical expenses. And if your loved one is receiving help with at least two ADLs, those services may be deducted as well.

Eligibility requirements
Eligibility for the VA Aid and Attendance Benefit generally applies to veterans age 65 and older who served during wartime, subject to income and asset limits. Home ownership does not affect eligibility, but applicants with more than around $138,000 in the bank may not qualify.
