Last Spring we posted a story about a fantastic Mardi Gras event at our Hattiesburg, MS, community, and we decided to revisit the folks there recently to find out about upcoming Fall activities. Turns out there are some exciting events coming up.
We all know tradition is a big part of having a healthy home life, and while the move to assisted living can change what tradition means, we're proud of the work our Hattiesburg community is doing to solve the challenge of building and engaging traditional events and activities.
Ahead of Thanksgiving, the Hattiesburg facility will celebrate it's first annual Day of Giving Thanks activity, which is aimed at recapturing the meaning of the holiday by taking some time to gather the residents together in the weeks prior to Turkey Day and write down and discuss the importance of the tradition, with specific emphasis on what everyone is thankful for in their lives.

Executive Director Mike Lalo explained the impetus for the event.
"It's an opportunity to not only explore what everyone is thankful for but also to reminisce on past holidays and what was special about those experiences...we want to create a sense of home and taking time to recall positive experiences, and read and share those stories is an important part of that," said Lalo.
The Day of Giving Thanks will take place on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and is expected to involve some prayer and spiritual reflections.
On a more traditional note, the community at Hattiesburg will also celebrate Halloween with a custom many residents have come to enjoy over the years, as children from a neighboring day care are invited to come over and trick or treat. The informal event is a chance for residents to pass out candy and enjoy the kids' costumes, as the Fall holiday season gets into gear. Seniors look forward to the event as a chance to reconnect with the pleasant Halloween tradition.
While autumn events have folks at the Hattiesburg facility looking ahead, this prior summer offered another activity that residents enjoyed, in the form of a performance by a local gospel choir over lunch in early July. Hearts Desire Ministries gospel group entertained residents ahead of the Fourth of July with church songs of inspiration.
