PC Magazine and other sources wrote articles this week on a new computer designed specifically for use by seniors, and coming to market for under $500.

While technology products geared toward folks over 55 are nothing new, as evidenced by the numerous telephone amplifiers, big-button remote controls, and simple to use CD players on the market, the development of computers for seniors is a novelty.

Kiwi's product is a desktop computer "designed with the concerns of senior citizens in mind."

A custom menu and specialized email program ease the user into the world of electronic communication. Social media applications are also integrated into the startup screen, thereby allowing seniors to experiment with new ways of getting, and staying, in touch with family and friends.

At Provision Living's GreenTree community in Mt. Vernon, IL, Executive Director, Jerry Jones, points out that while less than 10% of residents currently keep a computer in their apartment, those who do frequently utilize the devices to stay in touch via email.

"We will probably see a big change in the number of residents who use computers over the next five years, as folks more accustomed to using technology will just plan to have those tools even when they move into an assisted living community," said Jones.

Innovative technologies utilizing touch-screen computers are being developed for use in the treatment of seniors with dementia, and Alzheimer's. Communication remains at the center of the application, with families being able to stay in touch, regularly throughout the day, sending messages reminding an elderly relative to drink plenty of water, or informing the person of when a home help aide will be visiting.

Numerous stories abound demonstrating how communication technology enhances the lives of the elderly, and those include simple text messaging, online gaming, and, of course, the reliable email service.

Travel restrictions for seniors, due to health concerns and other issues, may have prevented all but sporadic, expensive telephone contact in the past, but if a medical condition prevents one from flying these days, a smartphone with basic text messaging service can connect a mother and daughter instantly, and regularly to form an ongoing sense of togetherness.

The Provision Living care philosophy emphasizes maximizing the potential of residents, and supporting an inspired, thriving lifestyle. With this in mind, new and updated tools of communication are considered a healthy off-shoot of an engaged way of life.
