Talking to Parents about an Assisted Living Facility

There may come a point in life where adult children will need to talk to their elderly parents about making the move into an assisted living facility. They may be having a difficult time taking care of their home or themselves and it becomes apparent that help is needed. However, this does not have to be an awkward or depressing conversation. There are many advantages of assisted living that can benefit your loved one.

Assisted living facilities provide access to medical attention that they may require. Qualified professionals are on staff and can assist during a medical emergency. Residents also receive help with everyday chores such as cleaning, laundry and cooking. This frees up more time for leisure and social activities. Another benefit of assisted living is the interaction with other residents. No longer will an elderly parent feel isolated or alone in their empty house.

The most important thing to remember when talking about the move to an assisted living facility is to treat your loved one with respect. They may already feel a loss of independence and talking down to them will only make the process more difficult. Listen with an open mind to how this situation makes them feel and assure them it is for the best. Make the decision together and do everything in your power to help ease your parent into the next stage of their life.

Great story. Childred should also not feel guilty if a family member is reluctant to make the change. In the long run the benefits outweigh the risks

What is the ratio of caregivers to residents. What if my parent wants to try it out for a while? Could she visit for a week or two? What if my mom requires medication assistance and has to take a pill at 7am in the morning and then goes back sleep and then has to take the rest of her daytime meds when she wakes up? She wants to rather late about 10:30 am . Then at about 11pm she has to take her meds again. I know there has to be some schedule for your employees to service all the residents that require this demanding type taylored monitoring and ai am concerned about the monitoring. she is interested but does not know if she can afford it.
