President Obama’s health care bill passed on the Senate floor and senior citizens are a group that is at the very heart of the discussion. Over the past year, rumors have swirled from both parties and have created enough media coverage that one cannot turn on the television without having multiple pundits arguing its advantages or shortcomings. With so much to gain or lose, shouldn’t senior citizens be informed on how this bill will affect them?

One of the biggest concerns about health care reform is protecting the Medicare program that supports many of our nation’s elderly. Many senior citizens rely on it to support them at an age where health is a very important concern. Some speculate that the bill will look to channel funds from Medicare to help support other programs. Others suggest the bill will actually offer major advantages to seniors including eventually eliminating the gap in prescription drug coverage known as the “doughnut hole” by 2020. Also many preventative screening tests such as for breast, colon, and prostate cancer will be free beginning in 2011. In this light, seniors appear to be one of the biggest winners from healthcare reform.

As both sides continue to debate, it easy to become swept up in a particular party’s ideals. While Provision Living does not have a position on the legislation that was passed into law, we do believe seniors should be informed. The best way is to start reading the facts and learn how one of the most important bills in American history will affect yourself or your loved ones.
